Food in brief, beers ‘n herbs oh my!
Good Monday morning!
~ Mark your calendar: Saturday, April 18th is the opening day of the Asheville City Market! If you do not live in town, not to worry. There’s a full listing of Tailgate Markets around the area here. For an even more complete listing, check out the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project website.
~ Another save the date: May 1-3 is the weekend of the Asheville Herb Festival at the WNC Farmers Market. I go every year, it’s so much fun! Enormous selection of herbs and veggie starter pots, handmade soaps, tinctures, and much more.
~ Will Asheville edge out Portland as Beer City, USA? You have until May 7 to cast your vote, though Asheville is getting the early nod. If you haven’t already, head over to the Charlotte Examiner web page and vote. (No cheating.)
~ I spent the weekend curled up with two new cookbooks, Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryant Terry and Almost Meatless by Tara Mataraza Desmond and Joy Manning. I am feeling inspired and invigorated. Both are in line with my personal cooking style: lots of veggies, lots of flavor and spices, either omit meat entirely or use meat to accent the dish and pull it all together.
~ Of course, I couldn’t wait to try out a recipe, so I made Bryant Terry’s Jamaican Veggie Patties. I learned of Vegan Soul Kitchen via 101 Cookbooks, and she reprints the Jamaican Veggie Patties recipe here. The patties were hefty, filling but not at all greasy. They held together exceptionally well. I think I’ll be making some for my plane ride west in a few months.
How was your weekend?
I really can’t believe that Asheville is winning the beer town thing. I love it, but am totally confused as to why.
Jamaican veggie patty? Share?
If you ever run across a Caribbean Roti recipe let me know okay?
And don’t forget All About Beer Magazine’s World Beer Festival happening in Raleigh on Saturday, May 2. It’s a giant beer tasting with many of NC’s best micro- and craft brews. Tickets are on sale online today and will sell-out fast! Tickets: http://www.etix.com/ticket/online/venueSearch.jsp?venue_id=2345&cobrand=allaboutbeer
Might mention that up to 10 mins can be cut from cooking time, especially is filling is loaded warm/hot, to keep crust a bit more moist.
Thanks for picking up and mentioning Almost Meatless. I hope you’ll love cooking from it. Love the blog! Just added you to my RSS …
Thanks again!
